Buchteln: Irresistible Yeast Buns with Jam Filling
Buchteln, the delightful yeast buns with a luscious jam filling, are a treat not to be missed. While traditionally made with plum jam, feel free to explore your favorite flavors. Originating from Bohemia, in Czech, these buns have won the hearts of many in Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Hungary.
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 350g Flour
- 50g Sugar
- 1 pack dry yeast
- 180ml whole milk
- 60g butter
- 1 large egg
- Optionally, a pinch of salt or use salted butter
Other:
- Plum jam or jam of your choice
- Butter for the pan and coating the buns
- Powdered sugar
Instructions:
Making the dough: In a bowl, combine the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, dry yeast, and optional salt). Melt the butter, then add the milk. Heat the mixture until it reaches a temperature of 30-35°C. Add the egg to the dry mixture, followed by the milk-butter mixture. Mix well until a slightly sticky dough forms. If it's too sticky, add some flour. Allow the dough to rest, covered with a clean kitchen towel, in a warm place for 30 minutes.
Forming the buns: After the dough has rested, prepare the melted butter and jams. Coat a round cake pan with butter to prevent sticking. Shape the dough into a snake-like form and divide it into small balls. Flatten each ball, spoon some jam onto the dough, and seal it tightly, ensuring no leaks. Reshape the dough into smooth balls. Dip each bun in the melted butter and place them in the prepared pan.
Baking the buns: Bake for 20-25 minutes at 180°C until golden brown. Once baked, allow them to cool slightly before dusting them generously with powdered sugar. For the ultimate experience, enjoy the Buchteln while still warm.
Get ready to savor the heavenly combination of soft, fluffy dough and a burst of sweet jam. These Buchteln are best shared with loved ones and savored with a cup of your favorite warm beverage. Enjoy!
